pickling tub

English Other Poetry & Literature children's stories
In the fairy tale "The Ogre's Bride" (here is a slightly different version which can be read online: http://bit.ly/dTwAP ) retold by J.H. Gatty Ewing, there is a strange way of cooking hares:

By his daughter's desire the farmer now procured a large number of hares, and a barrel of white wine, which expenses completely emptied his slender moneybox, and on the day of the ogre's visit, she made a delicious and savoury stew with the hares in the biggest *pickling tub*.

Of course the story doesn't explain why she used a pickling tub to prepare a stew, but until today I had assumed a "pickling tub" was a tub for making pickles, not stew. Can anybody help me understand what it actually is?

A large pan

It's the same idea as the pans used in jam making, sometimes called a preserving pan.

The meat is marinated

The way I read it, the woman first "pickles" (= marinates) the meat in wine before she cooks it. So she probably uses this special pot to put the hare in, poor the wine and spices over it, let it rest for a few hours, then cook it.

Thanks! Although I would prefer red wine in this case :-)

hares were soaked in white wine until they were cooked

My interpretation is that she did not actually make a stew using a pickling tub, but rather put all the hares to be used for stew in the pickling tub to soak the hares to make a delicious and savoury stew. One may say that the hares were "pickled" until the day of the ogre's visit.

disagree Cilian O'Tuama : soaked until cooked?
