A British friend of mine says that a "coquelet" is not a "cockerel" as found in most dictionaries, but a "poussin" in english.
cf. http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/panroastedpoussin...
Would I be correct in calling a "demi coquelet" a "half poussin"?
or should it be "half cockerel"? There are lots of hits for "devilled half cockerel" on google.
I'd be interested in the opinions of GB users (how do you confine your questions to certain groups of people?).
I've never done a not for points, so if I have this choice at a later stage it will be not for points.

: whatever the rights and wrongs, "cockerel" would sound most unappetizing to me - although I suppose they have to do something with the old cockerel - waste not, want not!

cockerel or poussin
The definition of "coquelet" is a young male rooster weighing under 800 g.
However, when it comes to cooking, I agree with the first reply you had: poussin is the word most commonly used in the UK - to my knowledge

Hi Miranda,
May be a small detail, but nevertheless...: if on a menu for instance, I would probably not write "demi poussin" or "half poussin", but simply "poussin"; this means what it means, whatever the size of the portion. What I mean is that, for instance, the menus of some restaurants will either state "poussin", or "whole poussin". It's just that customers might think that there is not much to eat in a "half" - which is wrong, but perception is not reality...
