if you think of a bird, the feet look the same as the shape you explained. It seems to make sense to me.

agree Tony M : Yes, this is a common way of laying out earth wiring (cover maximum area with minimum wire/digging) I don't know this term specifically, but it certainly makes a lot of sense.
