Carbon footprint assessment
Hello,
This comes from a release published by a rail company on its assessment of its carbon footprint, I'm not sure quite how to translate the following, though I assume it has something to do with redemption of carbon allowances: (I've blanked out the name of the company)
Les émissions relatives aux grands postes suivants ont été évaluées : .....
2. Infrastructures : construction des voies, ouvrages d’art et caténaires (via amortissement annuel des émissions générées – part xxxx)
Any suggestions gratefully received,
Anne

annual offset / balancing
carbon balanced by the world land trust
Carbon Balanced meets the challenge of climate change through projects that both offset carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and conserve biodiversity. It is run by the World Land Trust,
http://www.carbonbalanced.org/
I would have thought that it means bringing the impact of your footprint back down to zero.../ no impact by doing actions to offset it for example

From this year onwards, we are carbon balancing (or carbon offsetting) all of our flights. This means that we are funding reductions in carbon emissions in other places, to balance out the carbon emissions from our flights. This makes our flying 'carbon neutral'.

: It generally means "annual depreciation" in financial speak (you have a valid point). However, it does not make any sense in this specific context. Context is everything.

amortissement annuel des émissions
annual absorption of emissions
"amortissement annuel" generally means "annual depreciation" as suggested above, but in this case however. Source: http://www.larousse.fr/dictionnaires/francais-anglais/amorti...

Annual amortization
Why not? Amortization isn't just applied to money, it can be other, less tangible, costs too.

annual depreciation
I think this may be one where you need to get some more info from your client as there are several approaches to this sort of thing in the enviro. world.
However, the following might help, it's from the French and English versions of an online GHG calculator, and it at least gives an explanation of what this is about:
"Amortissements
"Depreciation
The emissions taken into account for the amortization (depreciation) of assets are those associated with the production of goods, in relation to the amortization (depreciation) period. Example: emissions associated with the manufacturing of a photocopy machine amount to 3,300 kg CO2e, its depreciation period is 3 years, the annual assessment of emissions will take into account 1/3 of the emissions, meaning 1,100 kg CO2e. When the equipment is older than 3 years, the impact associated with its manufacturing will be considered to be zero."
It's from Actioncarbone (a reputable bunch !!)
Hope that's of some help....
