French term

sur un mode mineur

French to English Art/Literary History
Merci!

in a minor key

If you are referring to this context:

- then I'd say your interpretation is about right - "messianic in a minor key", ie 'melancholic' - a kind of melancholic grandiosity.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Helen Shiner : Agree with your answer but messianic means inspired by the belief in a messiah, hoping for someone to come and deliver them. Not melancholic./Your sentence is ambiguous and therefore misleading, sorry, but it is. Don't agree with you on messianic.

I don't think I suggested that messianic meant melancholic - "melancholic" was my paraphrase of "in a minor key". Nb. I think here messianic means believing they ARE the messiah with the delivering message rather than waiting for one.
