French term

antérieur étendu

French to English Medical Medical: Cardiology discharge summary
"L’ECG enregistrait un rythme sinusal régulier avec des ondes T négatives an antérieur étendu."

I am presuming that the ECG recorded a regular sinus rhythm with negative T waves in the anterior lead, but I am really not sure what the "étendu" means in this context.

Thanks

Thanks Gwynn. This was an extremely technical phrase that really required a strong familiarity with electrocardiograms to translate correctly. No one else even attempted it or ventured an agree/disagree except SJLD, who is also a physician. Drmanu49 is actually a pharmacologist. How would he know that traditionally lead II (not an anterior lead) is the one used for prolonged recording to detect arrhythmias and that in this case, etendu is meant to mean widespread anterior lead involvement. For someone analyzing EKGs daily, the meaning was obvious.

Regards.

If you want to give the points to Michael, I have no problem with that Gwynneth.

Widespread anterior (T wave inversion)

There are 6 anterior leads on a standard EKG. It is quite normal to have T wave inversion in lead V1 but widespread T wave inversion means that multiple leads were affected, implying diffuse anterior ischemia. (You mint also get such an effect from digitalis or electrolyte disturbance, but then you would expect the non-anterior leads to be affected as well.)

sorry, clicked on the wrong answer. Yours was the answer I used, and extremely helpful in interpreting other phrases within the text. Gwynneth

Thanks Sue. A few typos in my answer. I used the iPad to enter it. I can't seem to suppress auto-capitalization, and editing is a pain.//http://www.apple.com/ipad/
