French term

point d'accueil et d'écoute

French to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. drug abuse support groups
I am aware of the French acronym PAEJ (point d'accueil et d'écoute jeunes). Does anyone know what the standard English version of this is? The context is support and treatment proposals for drug addicts.

Discussion

Martin Hemmings, MITI (X) (asker) Dec 3, 2006:
Tony - thanks for your suggestion. I should have explained in more detail: I have to distinguish between these PAEJs and "groupes d’échange ou de parole", which I have already translated as support or drop-in groups. The problem therefore is the distinction between the two.

drop-in (support) centre

Martin, I have no idea if this is the 'official' equivalent term, but I'd have thought it was certainly a good contender...?

Martin, seems to me faintly inappropriate to describe a 'group' as 'drop-in', since it's really more the sort of PLACE that you 'drop into'; so maybe you could reconsider your previous choice, to leave you roome for manœuvre here?

neutral Bourth (X) : Shouldn't that be "drop-OUT support"??? ;-)

agree Julie Barber : I also agree with your comments about what I would refer to as 'support groups'

drop-in youth counselling service

Proposed as an alternative as there doesn't seem to be a specific term as in French but rather individual centres that run their own programmes and therefore with no standard translation. I agree with Tony that it would probably be a good idea to re-think the 'drop-in' term for the group support, perhaps using peer support groups ...?

neutral Tony M : As specifically aimed at drug-addicts, I think 'youth counselling' is possibly an understatement, and too restrictive, since many addicts might be classed as 'adults' // Very good point!

Well the French acronym specifically states 'jeunes' which is why I felt it was a useful addition. Your solution is very valid but Martin said he was looking for an alternative :-)
agree nicole GELISTER : how about 'youth drop in support centre for substance misuse etc.. N

support group

I agree with drop in centre but these groups such as AA etc are often know as support groups in English.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Given that Maritn already has to deal with the 'support group' scenario, I think it is better to stick to something around 'centre' for the actual premises...

Youth Support Center (for drug addicts)

Hello,

Literally,

point = place

jeunes = youth/young people

d'accueil = where one is invited/welcomed to come

d'écoute = to be listened to

"Youth Support Centre for drug addiction" implies a welcoming center for young drug addicts. They can come here to be listened to and counseled.

I would not go for a literal translation into English. It would sound highly awkward.

I hope this helps.
