German term

Deckstrom

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial Electroplating
Context:

"Nach einer Unterbrechung des Versilberungsprozesses, muss zur Weiterführung der Versilberung durch einen Deckstrom von 1,5 bis 4,5 A/dm² und 6 - 10 Sekunden lang aktiviert werden."

Re. silver plating. Not sure about either the term "Deckstrom" itself or indeed the phrase "durch einen Deckstrom". Is it necessary to activate the current (Deckstrom), or to (re)activate the process by applying the current?

* Sentence or paragraph where the term occurs: See above
* Document type: technical instruction
* Target audience: Aerospace engineers
* Country and dialect (source): German
* Country and dialect (target): American English
Proposed translations (English)
3 +1 (cathode/plating) current density

Discussion

Bernd Runge Mar 12, 2012:
A/dm² is usually a measure for current density. Maybe, you want to incorporate that somewhere ... "to apply a current with a density of 1.5 to 4.5 A/dm² for 6 to 10 seconds to re-initiate the deposition process"
David Williams (asker) Mar 12, 2012:
Draft translation Literal version:
"After interrupting the silver plating process, it is necessary to activate a current of 1.5 to 4.5 A/dm² and 6 - 10 seconds to continue the silver plating process."
More likely draft:
"After interrupting the silver plating process, it is necessary to apply a current of 1.5 to 4.5 A/dm² for 6 - 10 seconds to reactivate/continue the silver plating process."

agree MalteLaurids : As for the phrase: Maybe "... it is necessary to activate (apply) a current with a density of ... for ... to continue ..."?
