German term

außer der Umsatz wäre hiervon befreit

German to English Bus/Financial Law: Contract(s) AGB
I am having trouble with the latter part of the following sentence from the General Terms and Conditions of a company that develops software programs:

Alle Preise verstehen sich zuzüglich der jeweils
geltenden gesetzlichen Umsatzsteuer, **außer der
Umsatz wäre hiervon befreit**.

"Umsatz" not being subject to "Umsatzsteuer" seems illogical and I can't think what "Umsatz" could mean in this specific context. Help greatly appreciated!

unless the transaction is not subject to tax

I'm thinking of a transaction involving a tax-exempt entity, such as a registered charity.

Or an export transaction, for that matter.
Example sentence:

Tax will be added to the price unless buyer provides evidence of tax-exempt status.

Thanks Andrew and Ken. This sounds really good. Makes sense now.
Peer comment(s):

agree Ken Cox : There are various circumstances under which a sale can be VAT-exempt, depending in part on the country. Export sale to an organisation or business with a VAT registration (ID) number is one of them.

Thanks, AC
agree Paul Cohen : An example: There is no VAT in Greenland. All articles purchased in the mother country by customers on the island are not subject to VAT. And VAT in Denmark is a whopping 25%! // It WAS a cool place to live until global warming switched into high gear...

Thanks, AC. Is that why everyone's moving to Greenland?

. . . except that the returns be tax-exempt

offensichtlich handelt es sich hier um Steuerfreiheit

unless the transaction is tax-exempt (or VAT-exempt)

Wir sollten hier aufpassen und "steuer(be)frei(t)" und "nicht steuerbar" unterscheiden.

steuerbefreit = exempt
nicht steuerbar = not subject to tax, not taxable, non-taxable
