This appears in a report on a theft. I can't seem to think of the English word at this point - when information is deliberately extracted from an informant, without the informant knowing the exact purpose the information will be used for (at least, that's how I understand it).

Thanks, I hadn't, but I've had a look now and the entries relate to skimming or levies, neither of which applies here. "Abschoepfung here is meant as in: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abschöpfung.

I found one instance of this being used in a fitting context. See below. Unfortunately, it remains unclear whether a set term exists for this in English.

inveigling

I like Andrew S's ideas of nobbling (non-juries) or tapping up - both of which would indeed work in the UK e.g. the East End of London, Brixton/Peckam or on Merseyside. But the asker is in South Africa.

So are pumping or grilling (for info.), but don't connote furtive extraction.

Inveigle can be used both of a person and the info.
