Law (general)
Abschöpfung des Hinweisgebers (name of person)
... (name of person) wurde von Mitarbeitern der XXX GmbH erneut abgeschöpft.
This appears in a report on a theft. I can't seem to think of the English word at this point - when information is deliberately extracted from an informant, without the informant knowing the exact purpose the information will be used for (at least, that's how I understand it).

German term (edited):
Abschöpfung des Hinweisgebers
Selected
extraction of information from the informer
"Abschöpfung" is a term used in economics and means "appropriation", usually of profits.
Note from asker:
Thank you, Carl. I felt this was the most appropriate for my context :). |

probing for information
I found one instance of this being used in a fitting context. See below. Unfortunately, it remains unclear whether a set term exists for this in English.
"Abschöpfung: probing for useful information in the course of ordinary business or professional dealings"
"Abschöpfung: probing for useful information in the course of ordinary business or professional dealings"
Note from asker:
Thank you Michael - I like this answer - I was wondering though if there was a more technical legal term for this :). |

inveigling
I like Andrew S's ideas of nobbling (non-juries) or tapping up - both of which would indeed work in the UK e.g. the East End of London, Brixton/Peckam or on Merseyside. But the asker is in South Africa.
Hinweisgeber: UK legislation: tipper-off; 'whistle-blower'; 'bean-spiller'
Not sure why it's not possible to post web refs. these days. But the time-wasting exercise may put off potential answerers.

Merriam-Webster is AmE.
So are pumping or grilling (for info.), but don't connote furtive extraction.
Inveigle can be used both of a person and the info.

Note from asker:
Hi Tom, South African English follows British English, so your answers aren't out of place :). I am, though looking for a US EN expression (I should have mentioned that, sorry). |

sorry, Tom, for making you feel I ´ve borrowed the term from you. I read your answer, i.e. inveigling and the discussion entries but found nothing to back your comment. I´ve long since stopped reading all the addit. remarks, often extremely lengthy ones.
