German term

Praxisbewilligung

German to English Medical Medical (general)
In the ref. line of a letter from a Kantonsarzt to a doctor and in the text e.g. ..."gerne eine Praxisbewilligung ausstellen werden..."

Is this simply practice approval?

medical license

A medical license is needed in most countries in order for a person to be allowed to practice medicine. It is what allows/permits him/her to do so. I think this comes closest to your original German term as used for example at:

Bewilligung zur selbstständigen ärztlichen Tätigkeit (Praxisbewilligung) -
http://www.gd.zh.ch/misc/formulare/formulare3.asp

The following website assists persons trying to obtain medical licenses:
http://www.physician-nurselicensing.com/?src=overture

Another word referring to this "permit" is "permit (or temporary permit) to practice medicine." See:
http://www.cs.state.ny.us/tsplan/tsp_display2.cfm?specCode=5...

http://www.state.de.us/attgen/main_page/opinions/1997/97ib09...

The official name used by the board of medical examiners (Colorado) is "license to practice medicine." See
http://www.dora.state.co.us/medical/lib-PhysAppIntro.htm

Hope that helps as well.

Bernhard

"permission to practice'" is another term, more general, maybe allowing for a differentiation in Switzerland.
Reference:

Example sentence:

A medical license is needed in most countries in order for a person to be allowed to practice medicine.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Cetacea : medical licence is "Approbation" in German, which is not the same as "Praxisbewilligung". To open a practice in Switzerland, you need both. Permission to practice would work, though.

right to practice

A "Praxisbewilligung" in Switzerland (since this involves a "Kantonsarzt"...) is literally the right to practice in one particular canton, while a doctor's medical licence ("Approbation") is valid all over Switzerland and the prerequisite for being granted the right to practice anywhere in the country. Incidentally, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, it is called just that: "droit de pratique".

Naturally, I can't provide an official English reference (as English isn't an official Swiss language--yet...), but it seems to be the same in Finnland:

For a clear difference between "Approbation" und "Praxisbewilligung", it might even be better to make this the "right to open a practice", because that's what it is all about. Of course, you need a medical licence to practice medicine in Switzerland as well, but it doesn't automatically give you the right to open a practice. That right might be denied to you for political or economic reasons.
