This is part of a social sciences essay. The sentence runs thusly: "Was wie ein Triumph aller Ansprüche des Menschen auf Ergiebigkeit der Welt zu seinen Gunsten ausgesehen hatte, erwies sich bald als das Symptom einer Wende zum gänzlichen Abgeschlagenwerden solcher Ansinnen an die Realität." What to do with Abgeschlagenwerden? Abgeschlagen often refers to exhaustion in medical settings, but can also mean 'to be defeated,' usually in sports. And why the -werden suffix? The native speakers I've consulted felt that it could potentially be either--does anyone have a suggestion for English that capturers that ambiguity?

I think this is saying that the possibility of such a view of reality has been completely vanquished/destroyed

maybe 'worthlessness' or 'helplessness' as looser versions of 'defeat'
whether this makes any sense at all is impossible to say without more context
'Ansinn' has an ironic element which you may want to bring out along the lines of 'daft/arrogant'
