Context:
Matterhorn, Chalet, Alphorn, Sennen – sie sind die scheinbar beständigen Bilder im Image der Schweiz. **Ausstaffiert** und präsentiert wurden sie allerdings erst in den Dreissigerjahren des 20. Jahrhunderts, als das Design der Schweiz viel erfunden hat, um das Land von den feindlichen Ländern ringsum zu unterscheiden.

Tricky for some reason because it sounds slightly out of place in German. Spruced up, embellished, enhanced... nothing seems to fit the bill.

I'd turn the structure around, such as:
It was only in the 30s that polished pictures were presented...
