Luxury hotel review
Does anyone know what these are? Would it be something like a pond? Water garden already comes up in the text, so I have to make a distinction between the two. Once again, we are on the subject of luxury hotels, and this is a discription of the grounds. Thanks for all the help!

irrigated gardens
The aflaj irrigation system (Oman). The property includes five aflaj irrigation systems and represents some 3,000 such systems still in use in Oman. The origins of this system of irrigation may date back to 500 A.D., but archaeological evidence suggests that irrigation systems existed in this extremely arid area as early as 2,500 B.C. Aflaj, is the plural of falaj which, in classical Arabic means to divide into shares and equitable sharing of a scarce resources to ensure sustainability remains the hallmark of this irrigation system. Using gravity, water is channelled from underground sources or springs to support agriculture and domestic use, often over many kilometres.

About 15 or 20km out of Nizwa, a few kilometres off the road to Salalah, Manah is a really stunning site with old towers and buildings and an old village abandoned in 1971. You can walk through the streets, climb on the roofs and towers. The only preserved building is the mosque from where you can see the irrigated gardens. The modern city is just next to the old one.

irrigation system / falaj-style garden featuring ...
I'd suggest this for two reasons:
a) it might not read nicely if you have another "garden" reference right after Wassergärten
b) Web references show that the Falaj is in itself not a garden but an irrigation system - also used to irrigate farms, for example
"The area is still famous for its traditional irrigation system, the Falaj"
http://www.tribuneindia.com/2007/20070114/spectrum/main5.htm
But you could also say "falaj-style garden featuring the traditional irrigation system from the mountains of Oman" o.ä. to cover the whole thing incl. Wassergärten ...

@ Courtney: why follow the crowd when nobody else has even seen my suggestion? Feedback appreciated (also re. Wassergärten)

@ Courtney:
That's cool. And you make a fair point about "system". ;-)

Note from asker:
The irrigated gardens worked nicely because this was an explanation of the water garden(which you can see from my posting), and I thought that the irrigation system sounded too agricultural. We are talking about a luxury resort here! |
