Italian term

ambientato

Italian to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
La cura degli oggetti pertinenti al personaggio è una premessa al "ritratto ambientato" seicentesco.
I understand the meaning, but I can't seem to come up with a good single word for it in English.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Aug 2, 2005:
setting I thought about something more descriptive in English, such "in the subject's setting", but this seems to be an "expression fige", so I'm wondering if the art world ever came up with an equivalent.

...or something like that. It is not a fixed expression, it simply means that portrayed people are in a familiar context, showing their personalities somehow, unlike in the Renaissance, when the environment was a beautiful landscape or some imaginary perspective/architectural elements.

agree Elizabeth Lyons : I would phrase it "within his/her/their own setting".

studio portrait

You need to read the expression as "ritratto ambientato seicentesco" - it was a form of portrait painting popular in the 1600s, I suspect with great success in the Dutch arena. The portrait was painted in the artist's studio and was filled with objects making reference to the subject of the portrait.

I'd say "17th-century studio portraits"
