rolling paper

As far as I can gather, it's that flimsy stuff (as colleagues state) that is used to wrap sweets and roll cigarettes, technically called rolling paper, which is available in various consistencies and made from a number of natural materials.

some info

Hi Kate, tough question! As it turns out, I've found that it DOES exist as a support for artwork. Riccardo Licata seems to use it. From other research, I've found that it's a rather flimsy kind of paper but I don't know if there's a specific term in English. I'll keep digging.
In the meantime, go to the first link below and scroll down: there's a picture of a work that is "olio su carta spagnola"!

I get the feeling that it may be similar to rice paper. I found "papel espanol", which is essentially cigarette paper.

spanish paper

seems to be a type of paper, I found a mention of it here, used for make up, and called "spanish paper in english, it was also mentioned several times as "carta spagnola" on various websites and was used by Riccardo Licata to paint on.
The second link is to a painting called "spanish paper with gouache" which I believe is painted on spanish paper.

this link talks about types of paper instead, and mentions spanish paper.
as does this one:
