Hi Fiona, "border" could work, but I also found this term. I guess it depends on the context, are we actually talking about wallpaper here?
"Tappezzeria" also means tapestry...

Hi Fiona - definitely not wallpaper then! Maybe it's "tapestry-style"...probably best to keep it simple and go with "decorative frieze/border" as Claire suggests!

Note from asker:
Hi Cath, the period in question is the sixteenth century, and the text is talking about frecoes, so I don't think it can be wallpaper! The Zanichelli monolingual gives "tappezzeria" as "tessuto per lo più con disegni, ricami e sim. per rivestimento decorativo di pareti o mobili". I'm just wondering if the term is being taken in a broader sense and simply refers to a painted decorative strip? As I say, the text is dealing with frescoes here, so I'm finding it hard to see where wallpaper comes into it, however the term "frieze" would seem to fit quite nicely - the dictionary defines it as a "decorative band". |

border
there's wall papers which cover the whole wall, then there is borders, which are technically strips of wallpaper that are placed usually at the top of the wall around the room
