Italian term

vere da pozzo

Italian to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Critical Essay
Discussion

Nicole Johnson (asker) Jan 28, 2008:
That's probably the best solution. Thanks Giles.
Giles Watson Jan 28, 2008:
Could you not use "puteal" with a gloss - puteal, or well curb, - at the first occurrence?
Nicole Johnson (asker) Jan 28, 2008:
Thanks for the clarification Giles I'm debating whether to use puteals/putealia since this is definitely in reference to classical architecture, so I think it would be appropriate, however I question wheter a general audience would recognize the term.
Giles Watson Jan 28, 2008:
"Puteal" may or may not be appropriate, depending on the context. It is used - as Ivana says - almost exclusively for classical artefacts, where the Latin plural would be OK but not mandatory. In a modern context, "puteals" is probably better.
Nicole Johnson (asker) Jan 28, 2008:
A question on Ivana's suggestion Would the correct plural form be puteals as you suggest or putealia, as appears in the Wikipedia entry?

A puteal was a classical wellhead, round or sometimes square, set round a well opening to keep people from falling in. Such well heads (putealia) might be of marble, enriched with bas-reliefs. Famous examples include the Puteal Scribonianum.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Once again it would be nice to have the option to divide up points here, since all of the suggestions were valid. I'm giving them to Ivana though, since I will use this term given that it is a classical context. Thanks much to all."

well curbs

These are the stone rings around wells to stop you falling in. It's sometimes spelled "well kerb".

wellheads

A Venetian wellhead that resembles a large urn. It can be carved in an ornate style, with tracery and stylized birds and animals, in a Romanesque design with strong Byzantine influence. The wellhead is cemented to an octagonal base that is carved with a design that resembles the wellhead. This in turn sits on a larger circular base, which rests on an even larger cement base at ground level.
