Italian term

un bagaglio quasi siderale

Italian to English Other Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Oggi XX (artist) ritorna dalle profondità della notte indiana con un bagaglio quasi siderale. L’India fatta “di silenzi e di caos, spiritualità e miseria”. I can't figure out the meaning of 'bagaglio' together with 'siderale'. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Discussion

Rachel Fell Jan 27, 2008:
I should have thought that something about the stars, sideral, sidereal, stellar, ought to be in it, esp. as "notte" precedes it
Arianna A (X) Jan 27, 2008:
So, it was I tought: legend has it that the stones formed when a meteorite fell to earth several million years ago. Would make sense in English use such a metaphor? Sideral? Galactic?
Juliet Halewood (X) (asker) Jan 27, 2008:
I think the writer (an artist and lighting designer) did actually go to India because it says after that his recent work was inspired by Shiva Lingham stones (found in India).
Arianna A (X) Jan 27, 2008:
I agree with Shera's suggestion. My only doubt would be the "quasi", because something can be enourmous or big, but not almost enourmous. Could it be the writer meant something related with stars? (siderale = delle stelle).
Arianna A (X) Jan 27, 2008:
If you've heard about "bagaglio culturale" (a wealth of knowledge, history, culture), this is a similar expression. For what I see, the writer in this case has chosen to use in a metaphorical sense "bagaglio siderale".

returns before dawn

che dietro di lui c'é la notte e avanza con questo "bagaglio" di stelle che si spengono con il sorgere del sole.
Così la interpreto io.
