Italian term

gattella

Italian to English Other Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Antique furniture:

Nel mobilio, per lo più gotico o rinascimentale, italiano, zampa a gattella il piede di cassapanche, armadi con profilo sagomato.

Does anyone know if there is a similar term in English?

Thanks,

Isabelle

Discussion

Neptunia Mar 13, 2015:
This word certainly hasn't had much usage. Googling around turns up the Treccani definition (http://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/gattella/) which is eerily similar to your excerpt. That definition makes me think it is like a lion's foot (just the claw, often seen on Italian furniture) except that there are other words for that and I can't find a single instance of gattella used that way. There is one obscure google books result that indicates gattella could be translated as "cleat" but that doesn't seem to fit with the antique furniture context. (Technical Dictionary, Volume 1 By Colette Crielesi, Giuseppe Landucci).

cabriole/ball and claw

or simply curved legs

gattella is supposed to be gothic - Queen Anne style comes later but they seem to have some things in common. I haven't managed to confirm this so low confidence.
