Italian term

gestuale

Italian to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
In art translations a frequent term and one I always struggle with. A couple of examples:

L’opera di xxx si evolve sulla base della grande tradizione dell’arte gestuale e di una continua sperimentazione delle tecniche incisorie.

la forma scaturisce come narrata dal gesto, ed in questa evanescenza di segni avvertiamo forte la volontà disgregatrice trattenuta a stento dalla forti indicazioni del pretesto iconico

I'd be very curious to see how other people deal with it. Thanks.

Hello Kate. This is helpful. I came across this but didn't take it too seriously as I didn't read it as being related to such a specific art movement. I think you're right though now. Thanks again.
Peer comment(s):

agree Paolo Dagonnier : Action painting indeed seems to be the right term.

gestural

I would rather opt for the alternative 'gestural' because in this way we can play with the term 'gesture' which follows

'Action painting' is sometimes also called 'gestural abstraction'.

Abstract Expressionism can be divided into two categories:
Gestural Abstraction and Chromatic Abstraction.
Gestural Abstraction is basically (Jackson Pollock was a famous artist that practiced the art of Gestural Abstraction he created an artwork that perfectly exemplifies this kind of art. His artwork is named Lavender Mist and it was created in 1950. It was an oil painting and is all about splattering just as in Gestural Abstraction.
In the other hand, Chromatic Abstraction is more about color the artist Barnett Newman created the oil painting Vir Heroicus Sublimis in 1950 and exemplified his style of Chromatic Expressionism with using color as his primary way of expressing.

What is Gestural Painting? (Characteristics)

The term "gestural painting", also known as "gesturalism", is used to describe a method of fine art painting characterized by energetic, expressive brushstrokes deliberately emphasizing the sweep of the painter's arm or movement of the hand. In other words, the brushwork in a gesturalist painting expresses the artist's emotions and personality just like a person's gestures reflect their feelings in everyday life. Gesturalism also emphasizes the physical act of painting itself, drawing attention to the "process of creating".
