Anche il contropezzo deve essere riscaldato contemporaneamente. Appena i lembi della scanalatura e del contropezzo sono allo stato plastico, essi vengono uniti realizzando la saldatura.

This is presumably a piece that supports the pipe in the area where heat is applied, to prevent it from sagging while in its plastic state. It would be heated independently, to avoid heat draining away from the pipe that is being welded. Whether is is a 'backplate', 'support', 'pipe trough', or whatever depends on what it looks like! (hence my grading this answer only as 'medium')
