If you open an account with a broker to by and sell securities ("you" can even be a major bank and the "broker" can be an investment bank), you can borrow from the broker up to the limit of the "margin" against the securities invested in. This is a margin account.

Correction: "to buy"
If you open an account with a broker to by and sell securities ("you" can even be a major bank and the "broker" can be an investment bank), you can borrow from the broker up to the limit of the "margin" against the securities invested in. This is a margin account.
