First one: if a lawyer can't turn up in court, s/he appoints another to do so. In Eng. & wales, this is called 'devilling a brief' whilst, in Scotland, a 'Devil' is a Trainee Advocate (Pupil Barrister South of the Border).
Correspondent lawyer, like a Solicitor etc. at a long distance away, pre-electronic conveyancing - sends another one locally to attend completion of a deal.
