From a neurosurgery report of a patient with a diagnosis of:
Angioma temporo-silviano sinistro, precedentemente embolizzato.
As well as an arteriovenous malformation detected on the MRI scan.
Rx torace: Esiti di sternotomia mediana con punti metallici aperti.
Open staples? If so, what does this mean?
Thanks!

If you research the various sternal closure methods after sternotomy, traditional methods consisted basically of wiring the sternum back together:
"Stainless steel single wire:
These sutures can be peristernal (around the entire sternum body), transsternal (through the sternal body) or alternating trans and peristernal [fig. 1, fig. 2 and fig. 3]",
whereas this nitidol staple has am "omega" shape and is in effect "open":
Nitidol staple:
Fig. 17: Fig. 17:MIP coronal, sagital and axial CT reconstructions of a patient with sternal closure made of one single wire suture (1), two figure-of eight wire sutures (2) and one nitidol staple (3). Note that the nitidol staple has an inverted omega (Ω)-like shape anteriorly and it is discontinuous posteriorly.

Just an educated guess on my part, mind you :)
