This is a from a conversation between Verdi and Toscanini about how a baritone should sing in "Otello", so I suppose it would be best answered by someone who has musical and/or singing expertise

In Verdi's Otello, Iago (a baritone part) has an aria in which he sings to Otello, telling him he saw and heard Cassio dreaming about Desdemona.
The aria is sung fairly piano, on spun breath, but there are high notes, and the 19th century, it was popular to show off high notes by singing them loudly and holding them longer than musicaly acceptable. Verdi clearly didn't want Toscanini (the conductor) to let the singer get away with that. Am 99% sure that Verdi never would have said "Mr" to Toscanini-they were friends in any case.

True, in operas a \"corona\" is usually put on high notes (to let the performer show off :-) but it does not convey an idea of pitch to me, only of tempo.
