@Andrzej Yes, that's exactly it. The context will determine the best usage, although the word extension will work pretty much universally.

Tutaj są dwie kwestie:

- znaczenie określenia "numer wewnętrzny", a to zależy od konfiguracji hotelowej centrali telefonicznej (PBX). Jedna opcja: albo jedna cyfra jak u Michaela (np. 0 albo 9), albo trzy ostatnie cyfry pełnego numeru, np.
ogólny numer telefonu do hotelu (centrala z telefonistką): +(prefiks miasta) XXX XXX 000 - telefonistka przełączy na recepcję.

bezpośredni numer z miasta do recepcji: +(prefiks miasta) XXX XXX 111 - wtedy na telefonie w hotelu nacisnąć 111.

- sformułowanie informacji na papierowej ulotce dla gościa albo na powitalnym ekranie TV. Może być:
For reception, dial 111.
albo:
Reception ext. 111.

Ja spotkałem się z każdą z tych opcji.

@Andrzej Yes, that's right.

You can dial any number that has automated voice prompts. For example, if you call a supermarket, and the voice recorded on the PBX system says, "Press 1 to speak to the pharmacy; press 2 to speak to returns...", then '1' and '2' are the extensions.

If you call an office, and the recorded voice on its PBX system tells you, "If you know the extension of the person you are calling, please dial it now, otherwise please hold for the operator," then the "extension" would normally be a 3- or 4-digit code.

Common usage While the term "extension number" is the translation for numer wewnętrzny (which is the subject of this question and correctly answered by Pan Darius), normally you would hear something along the lines of this:

"To call reception, dial XXX"
"To contact reception, dial XXX"
"For reception, dial XXX"
"To speak to the reception, dial XXX"
"For room service, dial XXX"

To my ear, the word extension (abbreviated as ext.) is more often used in office or corporate contexts, but it would certainly be understood in a hotel context, too. An extension number can be any string of numbers and not necessarily only a single digit.

ext. is short for extension which is an internal number used within a PBX systems. It is usually an additional short number and may or may not be related to the originally dialled number. The extension number is usually requested and dialled once the caller is inside the local PBX system.

Non-technical usage In the US, we normally say, "extension", "e.g. front desk's extension".

Ani extension, ani internal IMO A może po prostu 'dial xxx for reception' / 'for reception, dial xxx'? W internecie jest mnóstwo przykładów tego zwrotu.

Jeśli dzwonimy z hotelu, to nie ma mowy o 'extension', bo nie chodzi o dodanie kilku cyfr do głównego numeru telefonu, a stąd właśnie wzięło się 'extension'.

Internal phone number też stosuje się raczej w innych kontekstach.

Poza środkowym przykładem to wszystko sufiksy. Ale jeśli nr do recepcji jest trzy/czterocyfrowy to "extension" jest zasadniczo błędem logicznym, choć nie wykluczam, że w USA and beyond mającym charakter konwencji.
