Portuguese term

transversina de apoio

Portuguese to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering bridges
transversinas localizadas acima de apoios (transversinas de apoio), ou seja, acima de pilares ou encontros. É uma nomenclatura para fazer referência à região onde elas estão localizadas

Discussion

Mario Freitas Jul 20, 2020:
@ Nick & Andrea You're right about "braces" or "girders" in this case, since the text says it's supported on columns. To be sure, we have to know if the text is about a roof, a structure to lay concrete on top, a bridge, or whatever it is.
Mark Robertson Jul 20, 2020:
@All transverse beam?
Nick Taylor Jul 20, 2020:
@Andrea It could even possibly be "cross braces". But without image is a bit ambiguous. For example on a railway girder bridge "tra(n)versinhas" are the beams which maintain the "width" of the bridge and are located horizontally at right angles to the "longarinas".
Mario Freitas Jul 17, 2020:
Civil vs. Mechanical The question is about civil engineering, where the correct term in English for travessa and viga is "beams". Mechanical engineering uses other terms, but they do not apply to civil/construction.

agree Mario Freitas : Indeed. Those who are used to the engineering jargon in English know well the terms we translate every day.

transverse [web] stiffeners/stiffeners

http://www.abpe.org.br/trabalhos2016/55.pdf

Stiffeners - SteelConstruction.info
www.steelconstruction.info › Stiffeners

1.
Stiffeners. Stiffeners are secondary plates or sections which are attached to beam webs or flanges to stiffen them against out of plane deformations. Almost all main bridge beams will have stiffeners. However, most will only have transverse web stiffeners, i.e. vertical stiffeners attached to the web.
