Portuguese term

acontador vs. contabilista

Portuguese to English Other Finance (general)
Hi,

Can anyone tell me the difference between contador and contabilista in Brazil? I'm translating a "carteira de identidade de contabilista" and under "categoria" there is the term "contador." Does this mean he is a chartered accountant?

Desde ja muito obrigada!

Discussion

.. CPA (contabilista) in Uruguay is a University degree, whereas bookeeper is below a bachelor's degree. HTH.
Elizabeth is right. The General Manager of the company where I work is a "Contador Pblico" (that's the Uruguayan equivalent to Certified Public Accountant) and when I'm asked to translated a letter for Brasil, the title I use is Contabilista.

I would say he is a Certified Accountant. If he were in the USA, he would be called a CPA/Certified Public Accountant if he has passed the official certification test and worked for five years for a public accounting firm.

Is he just a bookeeper? If he has a carteira de identidade de contabilista he must be an accountant -it's te category that says contador. argh. :)

Bookeeper vs. accountant

Contador is bookeeper and contabilista is accountant. However, confusingly, they are often improperly reversed and there may be some vernacular leeway.

Perito contador would be certified accountant--that is why this gets so confusing. Contador can also be an auditor.

And, since contadoria is the accounting department, you can probably get away with using either contador or contabilista for accounant if it works better in this context.
