ranch and country estate

you might prefer country place instead of country estate, if the sitio is smallish and used more as a casual weekend retreat
Peer comment(s):

agree Margarita Palatnik (X) : yes

neutral ROCHA-ROBINSON : ranch = cattle related... country estate - 18/19th Century.. very large property... IMHO... :)

disagree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : a country estate is a large property owned by rich people with a large and imposing house......

in Brazil - \'sítio\' is nothing more than a \'weekend retreat\' - a house in the country/second home...
fazenda = farm [could be cattle ranch/commercial plantation/ ....] varies.. :)
Peer comment(s):

disagree Rosemary Polato : sitio is a small farm, not a 'weekend retreat'; 'chácara' might be a weeken retreat

I know people/lots in fact who have sítios/chácaras - call them by both names... neither necessarily 'functional in nature'..I agree sítio tends to be more often functional and chácara not...'rural property' covers both .. yes??

Ranch => fazenda....farm => sitio

in the cattle country in the western part of the state of São Paulo anything under 1000 'alqueires' is considered a 'sitio'You have to have more than 1000 'alqueires' to have a 'fazenda'
Peer comment(s):

agree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : so the answer could be farm/ranch or small farm
