etymology of 'xaxo' Thank you very much for your replies, it certainly makes sense in this context. Would you know the etymology of this word? I cannot place it in any Romance language.
Rosario Gomez (asker) Dec 20, 2006:
context for "dar xaxo" Eu e a Romina éramos amigos há muito tempo, mas não conversávamos muito, até porque na escola se um rapaz está toda hora a conversar com uma rapariga, assim já vão dizer que ele quer engatar, que tá a dar xaxo, ou então, que é pior, dizem que é um rapaz que só quer andar com meninas.

Thank you very much.

hook up

without any furter context, it is nearly impossible to be sure about the right translation. Sometimes "dar xaxo" means to seduce, to "hook someone up"

engatar could be translated as "hook up" and dar saxo as "sweet-taking" (meaning seducing)

I meant "sweet-talking" of course (it's getting late)

agree Clara Duarte : 'Dar xaxo', in Pt-Pt: 'bater couro' > sounds really degrading, doesn't it? ;)
