"Contemplar" doesn't necessarily mean that they were the subject of study - the meaning of the verb is much looser.

neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : In this context, you would say "subject of study" in English. Also, I feel that it's too strong a translation in English for the meaning of "contemplar".
