Portuguese term

mongol

Portuguese to English Art/Literary Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.) antique artefacts

This is a spiritist text, written in the voice of a XVII century spirit, describing the furnishings in an old castle. I'm just not sure what they mean by "peças de mongol" - is it 'mongolian', in reference to origin, or is the term used specifically for inlaid items (I've found one or two on the internet*), or even, given that "sândalo" comes next, could they have meant "mogno", as in mahogany? Anyone come across this before? Thanks.

Mughal / Mogul artifacts

I've seen the mispelling in many European Portuguese texts, when they meant to write "mogol" (referring to the Persian/Indian Empire) frequently spell it "mongol".

See an example of this here:

The Taj Mahal is the brilliant symbol of a love that aimed to be stronger than death and also the impressive reflection of the omnipotence of the Great Mogul, Shâh Jahân, who ordered it to be built in 1632 as the tomb for Mumtâz Mahal, the emperor's second wife and mother of fourteen of this children.

My pleasure Jennifer. Actually I have a special interest. I'm a direct descendant of Shah Jahan :) and hate to see my people confused with the Mongolians.
