Vou substituir groups por intervals, então. Muito obrigada pela sua atenção.

Well, yes ... ... that's the general idea. But if you want to convince your client that your translation is OK you'll need to use the proper statistician's jargon. That involves stuff like 'distribute', 'interval', etc.
PaulaEsp (asker) Mar 10, 2011:
Obrigada pela sua ajuda. Pensei em algo como: "Quartiles are statistical measures that divide a sample of data into groups." Será que estou apelando? Que texto esse!

sample data interval

O original é uma má tradução, possivelmente do inglês. Deveria ser intervalo de dados amostrais, um intervalo de valores que contém todos os pontos amostrais. Os quartis são (exatamente) três pontos que dividem esse inervalo em quatro sub-intervalos, de acordo com a distribuição probabilística aplicável, a qual deve ser determinada por alguém que sabe o que está fazendo. A frase exemplo, que é de uma incompetência ímpar, ficaria: (sic)

Quartiles are statistical measures which divide a sample data interval. The best known (quartiles) are the first quartile (P25), the second quartile (mean) and the third quartile (P75).

Really, there ought to be a law...

Whoever wrote this should not be allowed anywhere near a technical text. It starts as if a definition is coming, but nothing is defined. Instead, three examples are given, with no indication ("os mais conhecidos") that they are the whole lot. Furthermore, and they are not statistical measures. Rather they are reference points determined using statistics (by someone who knows how to do it).

By the way, one of the precious few correct things in that horrible phrase is the verb "to divide". That is the appropriate verb, not "to distribute"

(distribute) a (data) sample into a series of intervals

The phrasing of the source text seems a bit odd, but it is no doubt trying to explain that the determination of 'quartiles' is a way of distributing a data set into a series of invervals.
