Russian to English
Law/Patents
Law (general)
Разве что, если этот термин корректный, "prepared for, and passed, PhD defense"...

Vladimir Zakharov
: I don't think using "PhD" is appropriate here, especially given its title (and historical circumstances)

defended his doctoral thesis for the title of Candidate of Science
"His" eliminates the need to use the superfluous "prepared"

There's no conflict. You will mention the next doctoral thesis for the *degree* (thanks, Oleg) of Doctor of Sciences. In any case I strongly believe that the exact translation of the degree's title should be mentioned. Otherwise it's like... I don't know... Referring to NKVD as FBI (the comparison is not that great but can't think of a better one)

Note from asker:

Oleg Lozinskiy
: I don't think using "doctoral" is appropriate here, especially in conjunction with the Candidate of Science (why not Arts?) and "title" (it's academic DEGREE).

Yes, degree. Regarding "doctoral": I think referring to CoS as a doctoral degree is appropriate. Cf. http://en.russia.edu.ru/edu/description/sysobr/925/
