Конечно, понимаю, что имеется в виду, но никак не могу придумать, как это сказать по английски: was dislocated...?

Dislocation Thank you Jack for your correction. I was stuck on the phrase and dislocation was the best I could come up with :) And I here about deployment here all the time!!!

Условие задачи написано по-русски неправильно.
Так не говорят и не пишут.
Занимать оборону(оборонительные позиции), находиться в обороне, держать оборону, оборонять - это приемлемо и общеупотребительно для публицистики и мемуаров. Отчасти может применяться и в военном обиходе.

Dislocation If you are thinking of the Russian word дислокация, the English for this is not dislocation, it is deployment. So you could say the regiment was deployed to defend...
