In fact I had no idea you could march to the rear - I figured once you did an about-face, you would be going forward... Guess I would have made a terrible soldier... LOL

: w/GaryG. It should be "To the rear, March" or "Rear, March". The command in American English is a two part command with the first being preparatory, followed by the second (command of execution). i.e. "REAR (pause) MARCH!"

I wonder what exactly the command involves in Russian - do they just turn or start marching in the opposite direction right away?

The answer you have selected is absolutely wrong.
"About face" corresponds to "krugom" (given in 2 parts: kru-GOM!).
"krugom marsh" (given in 2 parts: krugom - MARCH!) is "To the Rear March" in English.
This command ("krugom marsh") is given ONLY when soldiers are already marching. So they turn and start marching in the opposite direction.
Any command containing "marsh" (Russian) or "march" (English) means that you must actually march, i.e. walk or run.
"About face" and "krugom" do not contain "march" component, and they mean that a soldier must turn 180 degrees, but stay in place, i.e. not start marching.
