grab the attention

I offer this just in case a more colloquial choice of words is in keeping with the style of the source text. 'Grab the attention' is really quite colloquial; 'catch the eye' is also colloquial but a little less rough; 'attract attention' is the least rough of all. They all signify the same kind of thing. You have the best idea of what voice is required.
