The woodcarvings in its church are made by masters from Novo Selo, the icons are painted by the great Renaissance artist Stanislav Dospevski. In the years of the yoke, the monastery is a significant
center of education. Today it is restored and is an operating monastery for men.

Almost 70 years later, the Soviets have been ousted and much has changed. A free market reigns in Russia and the Danilov is an operating monastery once again, as Russian Orthodoxy makes a rapid comeback from the days of Communist atheism.

Вообще-то, другие ответы тоже правильные. Так что просто ещё один вариант.

The Holy Monastery of St. Catherine, situated among the mountains of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, is the oldest continuously active monastery in the world.

Today, it remains an active monastery, although the monks have changed from sleeping in cubicled dormitories and reading in a common room to a system where each monk has his own cell.

: If you put quotes around the words, "active monastery" gets the most Google hits. As a native-speaker, wish I'd thought of it first! :) Seriously, it would be my first choice.

: active is too general. Not that I'm disagreeing, but I would prefer "functioning" as the more proper word here. `Active' just sounds too... active ;-)

This generality is a matter of perception. Not that I care much about the number of "agrees", but that was what first came to mind. I appreciate your comment :))

: "active" (for monastery) is definitely better than "working" and much better than "operating" ("operating" sounds like.. some refinery..):-))
