This word has been torturing me upon numerous occasions. Once the author had me substitute "Christianize" but in this example the objects of the action are already Christian.
The topic is Olga's visit to Tsargrad in the 10th century:
Однако Григорий по занимаемому им невысокому статусу не мог быть личным священником самой Ольги – скорее ему надлежало окормлять тех христиан, который находились в ее посольстве. Итак, некоторые следы византийского христианства прослеживаются на Руси уже к середине Х в.

Although a more modern term than 'feed' I think it fits well here. My father is a pastor and this is certainly the word he and his colleagues use.
