What has been transplanted is fertile soil, fertile soil that needs water, water that is discharged from the installed plant, water that will be provided in the near future by means of an irrigation network under construction.
Obviously the "vega" or fertile soil, will be used to grow vegetables.
What else can one do with irrigation and fertile soil on recovered ground?
If one wants to grow something on degraded ground (open mine, quarry, tailings, etc.) one has to recover it first. How?... bringing in lots of fertile soil and lots of water.

A "vega" is a lowland, or in some Spanish dialects a "swamp." In this case, "river bottomland" would fit best. I think that Spanish would use other words for the additional terms you suggested.

"sink" describes the function of this area, which is made of soil. It functions as a "sink" for the matter dissolved in the treated effluent water. That is, the water is used to irrigate this "vega"; it filters down through the soil and into the roots of the plants; and in this biological process, much of the matter dissolved in the water is used up in a harmless way.
It is an alternative to discharging the water straight into the river, with the aim of diluting the dissolved matter in the river water.

Hi Natalia, I suggest: "topsoil has been moved to form a soil sink"
I am not sure what the "quebrada" is but it sounds like they scraped off the topsoil (the top layer of good soil) from another place and have re-used it next to the river.

Thanks Natalia, now I know what a "quebrada" is! And the fertile soil would be alluvium deposited around the stream bed. What an interesting job you're working on!

For you to get an idea, a "quebrada" is shown in pictures here: http://www.destinoshoy.com/salta/salta_ciudad/quebrada_de_escoipe.php It is like the large strip of land inbetween the mountains. Usually a stream (or a river) flows through there. The topsoil they remove comes from this fertile area. |
