Spanish term

Dirección General de Industria y Medio Ambiente de la Unión Europea

Spanish to English Other Environment & Ecology
Hello everyone,

I'm having problems finding an official translation of the following:

Dirección General de Industria y Medio Ambiente de la Unión Europea.

I have been unable to find an EU Directorate-General that refers to both 'Industry' and 'The Environment'.

All suggestions are appreciated.

Best regards,

Jack

@Charles You're quite right. I'm not used to putting adjectives after nouns in English! To be honest, I don't understand why they can't be called General Directorates!
Charles Davis Jan 3, 2013:
Directorates-General I think Helena's suggestion is good, but (pardon me for being a pedant) the plural of Directorate-General is Directorates-General.

The term in your text is faulty; there is no such thing. "Industria" must presumably refer to Empresa e Industria, called Enterprise and Industry in English, since that's the only one with "Industria/Industry" in the name:
http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/index_es.htm
http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/index_en.htm

And Medio Ambiente is obviously Environment; it doesn't have a Spanish-language website:
http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/environment/index_en.htm

So either DG Enterprise and Industry and DG Environment (adapting gallagy's answer) or in full: the Directorates-General of Enterprise and Industry and of the Environment.

Thanks for the link, Helena!

Why don't you use Directorate-Generals of Enterprise, Environment and Industry? http://ec.europa.eu/about/ds_en.htm

Selected

Directorates-General for Enterprise and Industry and for Environment

See list of directorates-general on the EEC website:http://ec.europa.eu/about/ds_en.htm

I rarely use a 5 level of certainty, but this is from the horse's mouth, and there's really only one way to write it out.

Also, it should be 'of the European Commission' - not the European Union.

neutral Yvonne Gallagher : this answer was already given, as was the link (already given three times)//it's the last line of my answer and I gave links earlier. I'm also familiar with subject:-)

It was given in the discussion, but not in toto, and not as an answer. This is a subject that I'm quite familiar with, including use of the misnomer "European Union."

DG for Industry and Trade and DG for the Environment

From what I can find, they are two separate DGs just linked together here. In the link below there are other examples of various linkings

http://www.linguee.es/espanol-ingles/search?source=auto&quer...

here it is clear that Industry and Trade is one Directorate

confidence level should be a 4 rather than a guess

for the list of directorates where it is simply "Trade" here though I have seen it as Enterprise and Industry and various other titles as well

the rest of your document shoud let you know if you are dealing with Trade or Enterprise and Industry but I beive Environmentis a separate DG

So, it seems to be agreed that the "Y" is linking the two separate Directorates here.

I agree with the discussion points made by Charles and think his adaptation would work. I note he is using "Enterprise and Industry" rather than "Trade" :

DG Enterprise and Industry and DG Environment

the Directorates-General of Enterprise and Industry and of the Environment.

Directorate-General for the Environment (European Commission)

From Wikipedia:

" It was only in 1973 that an environmental unit was created within DG Industry; a fully-fledged Environment Directorate-General (DG) was then set up in 1981."

Could you be working with an old document?
