4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I appreciated everyone's help and esp. Francisco's comment to Liz's answer, but I think that this is the safest term to go with since I'm not sure which hacienda is considered to be at the center of this list ... Thanks!"

casco: (Arquit) inner city (LAm) ranch house; ranch and outbuildings) el caso antiguo de la ciudad: the old quarter/part of the city
Peer comment(s):

agree Francisco Rocha : de acuerdo, más que a una ciudad, casco se refiere a la hacienda que dio origen a una ranchería que no se ha desarrollado como pueblo o ciudad

Another option along the lines of Maria's answer. In Puerto Rico, at least, it's the original, old part of town, usually including the (old, Spanish-style Catholic) church, town plaza, fire station, city hall (alcaldía, ayuntamiento), downtown shopping area, museums, old narrow streets, many old residences, and other old or historic buildings. The town has since grown outward from the casco in barrios and urbanizaciones.
