Well, Patricia, very interesting, I must say. On the other hand, the more I think about it, it doesn't change the translation much one way or the other, does it? Even the church itself accepted bequests and donations that included slaves........Right?

the text is saying that the Church condoned the slave trade or slavery by assenting to the giving or bequeathing of slaves

That comma made all the difference. I understood the meaning of the sentence but I thought buenos mandos was one thing, like an offering or something. I think you comma clears up the issue.
