Spanish term

estructuras

Spanish to English Other International Org/Dev/Coop Charity work in the Sudan
Hola!

I have having difficulty translating the above word and would appreciate any help. The word is taken from the following sentence of an article about conflict in Darfur, Sudan and the work of Charity organisations in that area:
La calidad de las estructuras no era siempre la idónea pero si aceptable.

Gracias ;)

Discussion

DB-9 (asker) May 28, 2010:
Hi Lisa

Thanks for your message.

The preceding sentence is:
El Ministerio de Salud abrió 3 CTC y 2 CTU en distintos lugares de la ciudad que resultaron ser los adecuados.
'CTCs' refers to Cholera Treatment Centres and 'CTUS' refers to Choler Treatment Units.
Bubo Coroman (X) May 28, 2010:
I second Lisa's question... can you tell whether they mean "the structures in place to provide aid to refugees etc." (i.e. organizational structures) or physical structures such as water and electricity supplies?
Lisa McCarthy May 27, 2010:
Hi Deanne I think more context might be useful here. Is there any further clue as to what type of 'estructuras' they might be referring to? Are they talking about refugee camps or anything like that?

structures

I would keep the word 'structures'
Peer comment(s):

agree Fiona Hale : Even with the preceding sentence, it's not clear if it refers to physical or operational structures. Unless there's other contextual info, you could keep the ambiguity in English and stick with 'structures'.

It could refer to the premises or buildings, but more context would be useful.

operations

I think (without further context) that this could work here. It seems most probable to me that these "estructuras" refer to the systems of these organisations, their actual operations in the field, rather than any physical constructions. If your context doesn't give you any further clues, you might be safest to stick to "structures", but I don't think that's necessarily ideal.

In the light of your additional context, I would something like "services" to cover the work of these centres and units.

agree Fiona Hale : This could also work.

Spanish term (edited): calidad de las estructuras

structural quality of the buildings

The text doesn't make clear what type of structures. This solution would apply to a variety of possibilities, from public buildings to facilities for relief workers to individual homes.

Based on the asker's clarification, I am going to vote for 'structures'--unqualified.
