Spanish term

medico cirujano legista y forense

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
This title comes from a doctor's certificate for a patient.

The doctor identifies himself as "El suscrito XXXX, Médico Cirujano Legista y Forense con número de cédula ... etc."

If it were only 'medico cirujano' I would put 'physician and surgeon' which is a term that describes any medical practitioner, but this gentleman is additionally a legista and a forense.

¿What is a brief translation that captures the meaning of this phrase?

forensic surgeon and medical examiner

I have always understood that "medico legista" should be translated as 'medical examiner'. Both are administrative titles. The general discipline is called 'forensic medicine'; and 'forensic surgery' and 'forensic pathology' are advanced specializations within forensic medicine.

Note from asker:
Hi Muriel. Thank you for your suggestion also. I agree with the meaning of 'medico legista' but it looks to me that the 'cirujano' part goes with 'medico cirujano' as in the general label 'physician and surgeon'.
