Dear all,
I wanted to share some great news with you. I have JUST received an email saying that I passed my exam for a member of the Institute of Translation & Interpreting and can now officially use the MITI status for the English to Polish language pair!
This has really made my day and I thought I would share this here.

And yes, I am genuinely interested to hear more. Is it http://www.iti.org.uk you are talking about? Who is eligible for an exam and what does it take one to pass?
First of all, is it for UK residents only?

Yes, this is the one. To be eligible to take an exam for a qualified translator membership, you have to fulfill the following conditions (taken from the ITI’s website):
“Qualifications – A degree or equivalent qualification.
Applicants will be considered without a degree if they can demonstrate a minimum of 6 years’ relevant professional experience in translation.

Yes, this is the one. To be eligible to take an exam for a qualified translator membership, you have to fulfill the following conditions (taken from the ITI’s website):

References* - Recommendations regarding ability and good reputation
Assessment - Translators - a Pass in the ITI Membership Examination
*Referees must have known the applicant for at least 1 year. All references must be from different sources. References cannot be supplied by spouses, partners or family members. Applicants must provide their references on the appropriate ITI reference forms wherever possible.”
You do not have reside in the UK to take the exam. You sit the exam at home and have from Friday noon to Monday 5 p.m. to submit your exam which consists of your translation and a commentary (up to 1000 words). In the commentary, you do an analysis of your source and also linguistically justify the choices you made in your target text. For me the commentary was a “miniature” of my M.A. project.
After you submit your exam, the results are released after about 6-8 weeks. Once you have passed and paid your subscription fee, you will be sent an info pack. You will also receive the ITI Bulletin, packed with industry information and be listed in the on-line directory.
I hope this is useful. ITI staff are also very helpful, so once you decide, you can email them directly.

This is my main goal for this year, but it's been so busy! I simply need to reserve a couple of hours to prepare my application properly and get it moving for God's sake!

Candidates are allowed to consult a native speaker, if need be, but have to document it in the commentary and it can only be for a word or a phrase, not the whole of the text.

I wanted to become a certified member for several reasons: I love my career and felt that I wanted to be more involved, some of colleagues are members in ITI in UK and speak very highly of it and I thought it would be good for my career.
First of all, The application process was quite long and painful, I needed to download a lot the forms and fill in such as a full CV, three professional references, proof of a minimum amount of 750,000 translated words or more, proof of continuing professional development, copies of all relevant qualifications, code of conduct, application form, plus an application fee of £60.
After all this suffering, Elizabeth Dickson, the Admissions Officer in ITI was very slow to respond, and she give me a text to be translated then I had to wait about 3 month to know the result, the text was a technical, it is my top range, but the surprise was I failed because (The layout of the text needs serious revisiting), how can they asked from me to adjust the layout, If I the test was sent as not-editable PDF, I had to write it again in MS word file to keep the layout, the final result was very ridiculous, and when I need to advocate my test, you are asked to pay £240!!!! And the detailed report of good and fail points will cost you £60 !!!!!!!!!
The Admissions Officer encouraged me to resit the assessment (for another £235) in six months, but I no longer trust a process that is based on vague guidelines and that doesn’t provide automatic feedback.
However, I feel unable to apply again to an organization whose assessment process lacks transparency and a commitment to providing feedback to candidates.
I will leave the judgment to you.
