Not very interesting to me... Feb 7, 2007

To me, what's interesting is getting to know how other fellow translators live, organise their work, arrange their lives, spend their time, etc.

Running polls about topics other than translation, or just for fun, would not help us all get some insight of our trade as a whole and personally I would not find them very interesting I'm affraid...

Depends on the context, I would say.

"Fun" does not appear to be the raison d'etre of proz... Feb 7, 2007

I've been ticked off by the moderators for flippant comments in the polls (usually along the lines of where do people find the time to ask these frequently pointless questions), or being "off the subject", so am now refraining from adding my two cents for the meantime.
The avowed aim of proz is to be a professional resource - there are lots of other places on the net to have "fun"... if you have the time to spare, which I generally don't (right now I have about 5 minutes).

Please have a look at ProZ.com's mission statement :

ProZ.com Mission Statement

ProZ.com's mission is to provide tools and opportunities that translators, translation companies, and others in the language industry use to:

1. network,
2. expand their businesses,
3. improve their work, and
4. have more fun

Regards,
Enrique

But not for points... Feb 7, 2007

Brief breathers (without leaving the site) cannot be less than welcome. If someone wants to be fully distracted they will allow themselves to be anyway, so ProZ wouldn´t be open to accusations of frivolity and light-weightedness.

On the other hand, if a serious topic is on hand, it should always take precedence, the lighter ones only as fillers when nothing heartier is available.

There´s also no reason why they should not be relevant but light-hearted.... Whilst I think we always answer the polls with honesty, there is often jollity in the discussion forums (and indeed in peer comments) which is no way inappropriate. Just making the whole business more pleasant. A smile is never a waste of time.

Cheers

Or a combination of translation and the more light-hearted... Feb 7, 2007

What do you think of powwows?

1. They are the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll of translation
2. They are a useful source of interaction with other dodos
3. I had more fun watching ink cartridges dry
4. What is sex/drugs/rock'n'roll?

"Ve have vays of making you have fun" Feb 7, 2007

Enrique,

You appear blissfully unaware of the irony of your post.

Neil simply said that he did not think that "fun" was one of ProZ.com's most salient features.

Your reaction to this simple statement of fact?

To post ProZ.com's grandiloquent "Mission Statement", from which, I suppose, we are to infer that just because it says so, we are all, obediently, "having fun".

To post ProZ.com's grandiloquent "Mission Statement", from which, I suppose, we are to infer that just because it says so, we are all, obediently, "having fun".

In fact, if people (generally) agree that ProZ is not a "fun site", ProZ could, to that extent, be considered to have failed to fulfil this rather pompous "Statement".

I am not detracting from any of Proz's undeniably positive features. But "fun" is not one of them.

If you don't mind, I'll decide when and how I want to be amused.

Andy.

Of course Proz.com is fun! Feb 7, 2007

Hi Andy!

Surely it is fun to be able to interact with colleagues in the lively way that many of us do, instead of working in isolation like in the dark ages of translation?

Quite, Astrid.

But that's not a result of the site itself - it's the people who (when they let them) make it enjoyable.

I suggest that those who don't have a sense of humour re-read Tina's post. That's funny, not the website.

Andy

That is exactly the kind of 'fun' we don't need - thanks but no thanks.

My idea of fun Feb 8, 2007

I think site staff and I don't have the same idea of fun.

Negotiating with clients, asking translation questions (KudoZ), investigating potential clients (BB) and seeing how you can collect a client that doesn't want to pay are essentially what I understood ProZ is offering - this has nothing to do with fun!

Sure, when colleagues post jokes and funny anecdotes in the forum, I occasionally read them - I have even posted some myself. But that is not at all, at all,

Sure, when colleagues post jokes and funny anecdotes in the forum, I occasionally read them - I have even posted some myself. But that is not at all, at all, the reason why I am a member of this site. I want information on the industry, I want to know who pays fair rates and on time, I want to know who has interesting contracts and I want to discuss issues related to my work with colleagues - and although participating in the forum is often fun, on the whole, these things are extremely far from fun. In fact, I find they are a drag, and if I had an option, I would drop it all.

I don't think I would pay more or less $100 per year to "have fun" on a website. Hell, porn sites cost less per year - although I am sure even those aren't as much fun as they claim to be. Once again, I think someone somewhere (at site administration) has a very twisted perception of the value of membership on this site...

While we are at it, talking about value of membership, may I add that Google ads are another thing that leave me speechless? I hope those are not being added here for fun!

I entirely agree with this statement. And I like the idea of paying for membership in a website that is useful and interesting. I tend to look for fun in other ways!

Well, let's define "fun" Feb 8, 2007

Maybe we should distinguish between "the lighter side of translation" and silly jokes / mere entertainment.

Personally, I have a lot of fun on the Proz.com site, especially the KudoZ forum. Lively exchange with colleagues always is.

One of my most favorite polls ever:

"What are you wearing right now?"
- Suit and tie
- Pajamas
- Can't leave the house like that
etc.

Of course, we can indulge in discussing CAT-tools, low rates, non-paying customers, non-native speakers over and over and over. Ah, the thrill...

Quick polls don't represent scientific studies. No time for a smile? I recommend a seminar in time management.

Best,

Nicole

For once, I can't agree with you, Viktoria.
(Incidentally, you were kind enough to include me in your list of thanks, for which - thanks!)
The vast majority of forums are work-related - only a few are silly or "off-topic". I find those amusing as a rule - if I haven't already heard the joke before - in my pram, perhaps ....
I think the silly ones are harmless fun, and the fact that people often disagree with one another is part of what makes them fun. It gives a little light relief to those of us often working in isolation and sometimes on grindingly dull texts full of legal references and columns of figures.
The serious ones are genuinely helpful and Kudoz is a tremendous help, and I admire those who generously offer their help and support to others.
But please don't let us fall out over this. If the silly polls annoy you, just don't bother with them.
Live and let live.
Best wishes, Jenny.
