Source text - English Chapter One-Pros and Cons
In all professions, (and just about anything in life), there are both pros and cons, and being a freelance writer is no exception.
I always like to get the negative stuff out of the way first so I’d like to present the downside of freelancing, here goes…
You’re continually looking for work and/or assignments which can take up a lot of your time and sometimes it drains all your energy. On really bad days when no work is coming your way, it can even be soul destroying too.
There’s no one else to direct you, push you, stand over you telling you what to do next, even ordering you to send out more pitches so you always need to motivate yourself.
There’s no regular paycheck (unless you get a regular gig with a publication or a column). Bottom line is sometimes it’s feast or famine. Sometimes you hand in an assignment and don’t get paid for a few months or maybe a year if it’s payment upon publication (more about this later). It’s not unusual that the odd client or two won’t pay what they owe you and you end up becoming your own debt collector.
You’re responsible for every aspect of your business, sending out invoices, doing the accounts and paying your taxes.
And now to the pros…
You’re your own boss. While there’s no set wage, if you need or want to earn more money all you have to do is take on more work. The sky’s the limit as far as your income.
You get to (eventually) write about topics that interest you. And you get to meet interesting and sometimes fascinating people.
You learn something new every day and no two days are alike. If you like variety on the job then this one’s for you.
Freelance writing can lead to bigger things like writing non-fiction books and even landing an agent.
You can work from home, and these days, just about any place in the world and start living the life of the digital nomad.
Translation - Portuguese Capítulo 1.
• Você está constantemente procurando trabalho, o que pode ocupar muito do seu tempo e, às vezes, drenar toda a sua energia. Em dias muito ruins, quando não há nenhum trabalho, isso pode até destruir a alma também;
• Não há ninguém para orientá-lo, incentivá-lo, estar ao seu lado para dizer o que fazer ou até mesmo pedir que você envie mais propostas, então você precisa se motivar;
• Não há salário (a menos que você consiga um trabalho fixo em uma revista ou uma coluna). É oito ou oitenta: às vezes você entrega um trabalho e recebe na hora ou demoram meses, até anos, para pagar, principalmente se for somente após a publicação (falarei sobre isso mais tarde). Não é incomum que alguns clientes não paguem o que lhe devem e você precisa ficar cobrando;
• Você é responsável por todos os aspectos do seu negócio, como enviar faturas, fazer as contas e pagar seus impostos.
E agora os prós:
• Você é seu próprio chefe. Embora não haja salário fixo, se você precisar ou quiser ganhar mais dinheiro, tudo o que você precisa fazer é trabalhar mais. No que se refere à sua renda, o céu é o limite;
• Eventualmente você escreverá sobre assuntos que lhe interessam e conhecerá pessoas interessantes e fascinantes;
• Você aprenderá algo novo todos os dias e não há dois dias iguais. Se você não gosta de rotina, você está no caminho certo;
• A escrita freelance pode levar a coisas maiores, como escrever livros de não ficção e até conseguir um agente;
• Você pode trabalhar em casa (atualmente, em qualquer lugar do mundo) e começar a viver uma vida de nômade digital.

Bio
Hi!
My name is Paula Ledo, I'm Brazilian, and I've always been passionate about different languages and cultures. Besides traveling around the world, becoming a translator was always a dream of mine, both of which are now dreams that came true.
I studied English and Spanish throughout my teenage years, so I decided to choose a different language for my graduation, and it was Russian.
I have been working as an EN-PTBR translator and reviewer since 2017.
I began as an intern in a Brazilian linguistic services company translating technical documents, like oil & gas manuals, contracts, and certifications.
After the internship, I was hired as a reviewer by a multinational technical training company, where I revised from training presentations and e-books to corporate video scripts. At the same time, I was translating and revising as a freelancer and a volunteer (I joined Translators without Borders and Memorial Inumeráveis).
I currently work as a language specialist at Arcadia Translations, where I translate, edit, proofread and more projects in the area of health plan, medical, pharmaceutical, IT / technology, and even some gaming and toys.
