English to French: A Tall Man In A Low Land : Some Time Among the Belgians General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English used for my thesis : The jumbled streets of the Outremeuse, with their red-brick terraces and single-room corner bars and cafés, could be anywhere in Belgium or northern France. They have one distinctive feature, however: the potales, little niches in the walls containing figurines of the Madonna. At certain times of the year these tiny sculptures of the Virgin are honoured with gifts and flowers. In the Museum of Wallonian Life there had been photos of things called “nail oaks”, special trees to which the sick would attach items of clothing in the hope of a cure. This old pagan tradition seemed to live on in the Outremeuse in a form more acceptable to the Church. At one time I might have taken a traditional British view of this and categorised it rather sniffily as the colourful yet backward behaviour of a superstitious people. That was before I saw Northumbrians laying bouquets down before a poster of the late Princess of Wales in the window of our local department store.
Translation - French Les rues étroites d’Outremeuse, les façades de briques rouges, les petits bars, les cafés au coin des rues sont caractéristiques de n’importe quelle ville de Belgique ou du nord de la France. Elles ont cependant une particularité : les potales, soit les petites chapelles murales dédiées à la Vierge. À certaines périodes de l’année, des fleurs, des cadeaux sont déposés en offrande devant ces petites sculptures. Au Musée de la Vie wallonne, étaient exposées des photos d’« arbres à clous » : les malades attachaient des vêtements aux arbres dans l’espoir d’être guéris. Cette vieille tradition païenne semblait avoir perduré en Outremeuse, mais sous une forme plus acceptable pour l’Église. J’aurais pu, à un moment donné, faire mon Britannique traditionnel en taxant avec dédain les Liégeois de superstitieux, cette tradition de drôle, mais d’arriérée. C’était avant que je ne voie des Northumbriens déposer devant la vitrine de notre grand magasin local des bouquets devant une affiche de la défunte princesse de Galles.

Source text - English In this article we detail the different types of data that are created, collected and analysed and discuss how they enable different forms of surveillance and control of HRD. This is followed by several recommendations on how to regain a certain degree of control over HRD “digital shadows” [3] and a list of useful resources and guides which enable one to use the Internet with increased privacy and security while maintaining one’s political engagement and citizenship. This message was sent to mobile phone users located near a protest area in Kiev in 2014, their mobile phones revealing their location. One seemingly innocent piece of data such as location, situated in the social and political context of Ukraine, was linking people to a larger political tension. The prosecutor general called the protest a crime against the state, and labelled protesters or those in the protest’s vicinity as criminals.
Translation - French Dans cet article, nous aborderons les différents types de données existants qui sont récupérés et analysés. Nous analyserons également comment ces données permettent que différentes formes de surveillance et de contrôle voient le jour. Ensuite, nous prodiguerons quelques conseils afin que vous en sachiez davantage sur les « ombres numériques » en vous prodiguant quelques ressources et guides qui vous aideront à naviguer de manière plus sûre et sécuritaire tout en étant un citoyen politiquement engagé.

« Cher abonné, vous êtes inscrit en tant que participant à une émeute massive. » Ce message a été envoyé en 2014 aux utilisateurs de téléphones portables qui se trouvaient à proximité d’une manifestation à Kiev. Leurs téléphones portables avaient révélé leur emplacement. Dans le contexte social et politique ukrainien, une simple donnée comme votre localisation peut vous relier à une tension politique majeure. Le procureur général taxa la manifestation de crime contre l’État. Il taxa les manifestants et ceux se trouvant à proximité de la manifestation de criminels.

Graduated from Uliege, York University in Toronto and Concordia University in Montréal, I am used to work with regional French (both Canadian and Belgian) as it was central to my master’s thesis Les belgicismes emblématiques dans la retraduction de “A Tall Man In A Low Land: Some Time Among the Belgians” also as standard French. Localization is central to my methodology if required.
I translated the book called La Confédération, 1864–1999: Nouvelles Perspectives(Reconsidering Confederation: Canada’s Founding Debates, 1864–1999) for the 150th anniversary of Canada.
Furthermore, I was part of the translation team for the article called “Privacy, Surveillance and Data Tracking: Why Does it Matter for Human Rights Defenders?” For the Forum Sociale de Montréal. Lately, I have been teaching French as a second language as I also have some teaching experience as a TA.
